Older Designs of VTOL Tilt Rotors and Full-Wing Tilt Rotors May Now Be Possible With New Materials


Back in 2000, thereloadershouse I had suggested that it was perhaps a good idea to go back and look at all the older vertical takeoff and landing or VTOL designs which had either been on the drawing board, or where prototypes had been previously put forth over the last eight decades. Why you ask? Because today we have new materials and we can do things we couldn’t do before, and therefore many of those old designs may turn out to be great designs today, whereas they may have crashed and burned or not even gotten off the ground in past periods. ammunitionscenter

Interestingly enough, we know more about science today as well, we understand the vortex flows that come forth with many of the VTOL aerospace designs and we have concept such as paddle wings, rotor wings, morphing wings, ducted fans, and deflection lift, just to name a few and all of these are available to us, as well as the bio mimicry we find in nature. There is an interesting NASA Report telling of all the vibrational and vortices challenges with older tilt rotor models, specifically full-wing VTOL tilt rotors published in March of 1961 (NASA TN D-729) titled; “Structural-Loads Survey on Two Tilt-Wing VTOL Configurations,” by John F. Ward at Langley Research Center, Langley Field, VA.

Also, we may be able to create materials which have airflow pass-throughs that can be used during hover, take-off, or landing and then close up to become a solid one-piece airfoil once the aircraft has entered transitional flight. The sky is the limit, oros.store literally, and it’s time to make use of all of these old designs, all of the wind tunnel testing data, and all the mathematical computational modeling use today in creating aerospace innovations.

It is interesting that as our think tank talks about these things and that others are also talking about similar ideas. In fact I’d recently noted that DARPA had put through new initiatives for cross pollinating scientific endeavors to come up with new VTOL designs that could carry a tremendous amount of increased weight, affluentwords incredibly stable flight characteristics, and perhaps even go supersonic. Yes, I believe all that is possible, and more thanks to material science, and the fact that we know quite a bit more than we did back in the day.
